Cyclox event to get Potholes fixed – ‘Tour de Potholes’

Sunday 14 August, 10am – 1pm, main event more details soon
Or anytime between Sat 13 – Tuesday 16 August

How many times have we had to avoid potholes, or hit one, and thought that something ought to be done about it? Maybe we thought that our one complaint would have little or no effect. Councils ask the public to notify them of road defects on FixMyStreet.com. So if enough of us can make that
effort, we can help Oxfordshire County Council to target the worst areas and perhaps bid for more funding for repairs

How can you help?
• Join the main event on Sunday 14 August, 10am – 1pm.
• (Reports from Sat 13 to Tuesday 16 Aug will also be taken into account for this campaign.)
• Record road defects on your favourite ride or commute, following the instruction below.
• Maybe get together with a group of friends or a club, to cover your local area.
• Come to the campaign meet-up to review the outcome, Tues 23 Aug, 7.30, St Michael’s in the

Oxford Local Plan Consultation – your views needed

Oxford City Council has started the process of developing the Oxford Local Plan 2016 to 2036.   This is called the First Steps Consultation and they are seeking the views of stakeholders on the initial set of plans.  They have issued a series of papers as the start of the process of consultation. There is a summary document that sets out the issues in a short booklet that is worth a quick read. It accompanies 18 different background papers. Cyclox has developed its thoughts and your comments either to Cyclox or to the City are welcome.

David Jaques has died

Cyclox is sad to report that David Jaques, one of our longest and most active members has died. Many of you will remember David whose boundless enthusiasm and wit (not to mention the home-made beer he brought along) made the Cyclox stalls such fun. He was a committed utility cyclist, and even when his memory was getting a bit shakey he would cycle to his favourite haunts around Iffley. David managed the Cyclox stall for many years, and found a variety of intriguing items to sell, not all of them perhaps destined for a long and useful life. He managed to obtain cheap dayglo jackets which sold well, but the solar powered rucksack lights were perhaps an idea whose time had not yet come. Though we all enjoyed his well-observed and sometimes irreverent comments on local cycle policymakers we may not have known as much as we should about his ‘other life’. He was a respected author and trainer on educational methods, especially the dynamics of small group working. He was much in demand by Brookes and the Oxford Medical School. Wake up call for Oxford – another city shows its support for cycling

As if finding Richard III’s grave wasn’t enough, Leicester has now produced some imaginative cycling infrastructure. Perhaps most enviable of all – they trial ideas with cones or paint to see if it works.
