f) Northern Gateway

The Northern Gateway is a proposed development between and including the Wolvercote and Pear Tree roundabouts to the north of Oxford.

In October 2018, Cyclox has submitted its response to the consultation.

In February 2014, Oxford City Council produced an Options Document for the Northern Gateway, and undertook a consultation which closed at the end of March. The vision is to create an employment area which will build on the strengths of Oxford’s economy in education, health, research and development, and knowledge-based businesses, as well as residential development.

Of particular interest for cyclists is the promise that “significant resources will be directed to improving the local highway and footpath/cycle network to benefit users of all forms of transport”.  This will include capacity improvements to both the Wolvercote and Cutteslowe roundabouts and the provision of a new link road between the A40 and A44 to remove much of the through traffic from the area and to improve the character and local environment along these main roads.

In August 2014 the Oxford Times reported that the funding application for the A40-A44 link road has been turned down by the government.  The inspector has said the Northern gateway plans can only go ahead if the link road is built. The city council said there will be another round of funding applications they can apply for later in the finacial year.

A further consultation on the Northern Gateway Area Action Plan closed on 15th September 2014. Cyclox’s response is here.  Cyclox is a key stakeholder in this project and will ensure a strong voice for cyclists in the development.

On 12th March 2015 Alison Hill is attending the Inspector’s Examination hearing, and will stress the need for dedicated cycle routes to the new Parkway station and along the road to the Peartree roundabout, with a safe crossing on to the A44 to Woodstock.

Cyclox’s headline request is for a cyclist and pedestrian bridge across the Wolvercote roundabout.

On Thursday 14th April 2016 from 3pm until 7pm and Saturday 16th April 2016 from 10am until 1pm, Thomas White Oxford held a public exhibition to update local residents on emerging proposals at the Jury’s Inn Oxford, Godstow Road, Oxford, OX2 8AL.  The information from the exhibition is on their Northern Gateway Consultation website.
