e) River and Canal routes

The path alongside the river Thames (Isis) in Oxford offers an attractive, car-free route into and around Oxford.  The Sustrans National Cycle Network route 5 follows the path through Oxford.  The county council have recently made significant improvements to the path through their Riverside routes cycle project.

The Oxford Canal is an important traffic-free leisure route for people on bikes heading towards Banbury.  There are canal-side pubs and villages along the way, and the option of combining the journey with trains, as the line runs in parallel.  However, the path is narrow and bumpy in places.  In April 2019, the Oxford Mail reported that the Canal & River Trust had rebuilt more than 400 metres of the canal bank from above Elizabeth Jennings Way north to near St Edwards School in Summertown.
