Cyclox Circular December 13

Cyclox AGM (unconfirmed minutes at www.cyclox.org/cyclox-meetings/cyclox-annual-general-meetings/)

We welcomed two new members to the committee: Wendy Vrij and Cecilia Fry.  Sue Rowe took over from Cathy Mulhall as treasurer. We are very grateful to Cathy for several years dedicated to keeping Cyclox finances straight. As well as electing a new chair (see below), a 12-5 majority approved a motion from Kevin Hickman to support cycle provision that is more inclusive so that all types of cyclists may use it efficiently. The committee has reviewed how this motion should influence our activities. For instance, we’ll be asking all members for examples of unhelpful barriers around Oxford – we are thinking both of physical obstacles and more subtle things such as poor signage, layouts that leave cyclists in difficult positions. More details soon.

Green Fair

Cyclox’ stall at the Green Fair in the Town Hall was a very successful event with lots of conversations about cycling and ideas for how to improve things. Walton St Cycles provided stock so that we could attract people to the stall and we sold a lot of bike lights and maps.

Stalls co-ordinator

Stalls at local Fairs greatly benefit our outreach.  Cyclox badly needs a member to put a light hand on the handlebar to arrange our stall programme. There are about half a dozen each year.  Could you help? You’d need to (i) keep a calendar of events (ii) arrange bookings and payments (iii) supervise the volunteer timeslots for each day. If you are interested please contact one of the committee.

Car sticker competition

There were 26 entries – thanks a lot!  The three winners have each won a pair of Lezyne clip-on 15-lumen 60-hour bike lights.  Their slogans were “I’d rather be cycling”; “Wish I was cycling”; “I give bicycles room”.

Because of the large number of good entries, thecompetition will be repeated.  The criteria this time will include the additional requirement of originality, i.e. your phrase does not come up on a Google search.  Unsuccessful original entries that got at least one vote from the judges last time will be re-included automatically.  Again there will be prizes for the winning three.  For inspiration (but not copying!) see http://tinyurl.com/stickr.  Deadline: midnight 1st February 2014.

New Chair for Cyclox

Simon Hunt was installed as the new Chair of Cyclox at the AGM, and the meeting thanked James Styring for 10 years of enthusiastic leadership. They both contributed to a news item in the Oxford Mail on 10 years of Cyclox:www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/10847986.Balancing_the_tensions_between_city_navigators/

and Simon then had an article about the priorities for Cyclox:www.oxfordtimes.co.uk/news/opinions/first_person/10858937.First_Person__Cyclox_chairman_Simon_Hunt/

while James wrote in Cycling Weekly: www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/latest/541445/cycling-in-my-city-oxford.html

Simon will introduce himself with a New Year message online.  Check the Cycloxwebsite as the fireworks light the sky at midnight on 31st December!

46000 miles on a push-bike. See www.worldwidebikeride.com/

Matt Blake, cyclist extraordinaire from li’l ol’ Banbury, must be up there amongst the great cycling adventurers of all time.  He pedalled the whole way round the world (2008-12) with his tent in his panniers, through Turkey, Kazahakstan, China, Thailand, Japan, top to bottom of the Americas, bottom to top of Africa, and finally back through Europe.  He treated a packed audience at the Cyclox meeting on 4th December to a gripping account of his trip, beautifully illustrated with lots of pictures and selfies.  No wonder the Social afterwards was full of buzz.

BikeSafe progress

With Cyclox aiming to extend its interest to ‘Greater Oxford’ the campaign to build a safe cycle and walking path along the B4044 from Eynsham is relevant. Discounts on bike friendly West Wales cottage for Cyclox members

Kate reports that the discounts will continue next year if you book by the end of December: http://serenloft.co.uk/2013/11/01/your-perfect-base-for-a-cycling-break/

Finally, Christmastime thanks to all of you who support us and who cycle responsibly.  Thanks especially to the bike shops in Oxford whose generous discounts to members ought to make your Christmas shopping a cinch!  Ride away now, and buy!
