Understanding Cycling and Walking – the author’s talk about their report and how we should listen more to non-cyclists

Cycle City funding

We submitted our suggestions and look forward to hearing what has been approved. We want to hear that some one way streets will be made cycleable in both directions, Pembroke St being the best example. The attached gives welcome detail to how the city are thinking. Dan Levy reports that nearly all the one way streets in Paris are now two way for bicycles. And if anyone suggests that motorists are subsidising other road users: http://www.ippr.org/images/media/files/publication/2012/08/war-on-motoring-myth_Aug2012_9542.pdf

NICE guidance on active travel

NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) have published the evidence for getting more people to walk and cycle: http://www.nice.org.uk/nicemedia/live/13975/61629/61629.pdf

Jared Diamond Podcast

This is an excellent refresher for those members who heard Jared talk at our meeting about cycling safely through Oxford, and for those who missed the talk this covers all the points and is just as inspiring. http://podcasts.ox.ac.uk/efficient-cycling-video

Bus parking in Magdalen St East

The plan to write jointly with OxPA to ask the bus companies to park 3 metres back from the junction has produced a lot of interesting debate about politics and art of the possible. One suggestion is that we should lobby for the (currently useless) cycle track on the left side to be moved to the right side, adjacent to the cycle parking. Views on how you would want this area improved are welcome.

Cambridge cycling envy

Oxford has always competed with Cambridge and where cycling is concerned tends to come second, but at least we have better cycle facilities at the station. Now Cambridge plans to leapfrog us into first place: http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/News/Cycling-into-future-with-3000-spaces-at-station-06122012.htm. Cambridge have also spent their LSTF money on a more clearly cycling orientated project:: www.cambridge-news.co.uk/News/New-cycle-route-set-to-be-built-in-Cambridge-07122012.htm
