Meetings for 2014

Ruth Davies our events manager asks members for suggestions for next year’s talks. We have had a particularly successful range of well-attended meetings this year and are keen to continue this. We are also interested in suggestions for bicycle-related films. Please email her on harefields@hotmail.com

Plain Speaking – improving cycling at St Clements

Andrew Smith MP and the county planning team contributed helpfully to this well-attended and very productive meeting. We are especially pleased that there was widespread recognition of the different needs of cyclists of varying ability and how crucial this junction is to enabling through journeys from Oxford’s main residential area to the city centre. Richard Mann has compiled the attached summary as Cyclox, submission to the planning team. Cyclox has received many comments on the Plain which have informed our conclusion.

Meeting with Nicola Blackwood MP

Cyclox committee members met with Nicola Blackwood MP to discuss cycling issues in her constituency. Ms Blackwood called for cycle training for new students which resulted in CTC offering to provide this. Cyclox’ view is well put by Richard Mann:  We need to make the city roads suitable for novice cyclists, not the other way round.

E-bike query

An octogenarian cyclist has put a crank drive electric motor conversion on his bike but isn’t convinced it is working well. He wonders if any members have experience of these and could advise him: jskeats@btinternet.com

Gritting cycle tracks

Cyclist Bill Coumbe asked the county council about clearing snow and ice from cycle tracks. This is the response: “As you may know it is not the County Councils Policy to pre-treat footways and cycle tracks however our policy also states that we will endeavour to clear snow from key footway routes within 48 hrs of a snow event where resources permit. I have been tasked with compiling a schedule of such ‘key’ routes for the county, with this in mind I intent to consider the Marston cycle track as one of those to be added to the list for post snow treatment.” Paul Wilson, Adverse Weather Manager

Westgate consultation

The Westgate Alliance plans are at www.westgateoxfordconsultation.co.uk/our-plans/proposed-plans.  Look especially under “Access and transport”

Or in their “shop” in Westgate itself, near Sainsbury’s with drop in sessions until today Saturday 26th. This consultation is for them to prepare for outline planning permission this autumn.  There is to be a further application for detailed permission during 2014.  Of course, it’s much better to try to influence the plans *now*.

Children in Need in Oxford

The One Show will be broadcasting live from Oxford city centre on Thursday 14th November at 7pm as part of our Children in Need Rickshaw Challenge, in which we task five youngsters who’ve benefitted from the charity’s projects to cycle a rickshaw 700 miles from Northern Ireland to London.

As part of their journey they’ll be stopping off in Oxford for our live show. As Oxford is well known for the popularity of cycling, we would love our riders to arrive in the town centre accompanied by a convoy of cyclists. I wondered if you could pass my contact details on to the staff and students on your email list, and ask if they would be willing to do us a huge favour and join our little cavalcade? Hayley.Rhodes@bbc.co.uk
