National Guidance on Cycle Infrastructure

  • LTN2/08 (2008) - the main government guidance note on cycle infrastructure for England and Wales, which tells you most of the things you ought to think about, even if you still have to make up your mind for yourself.
  • Cycling in Pedestrian Areas (1993) - much of the research was done in Oxford (Queen Street and Turl Street)
  • Continental-geometry roundabouts (1997) - this has partly been implemented at The Plain (though it’s still about 40% bigger than recommended). We’ve since also learnt that spiral markings are essential when junction arms are close together.

Danish Cycling Concepts (2000) - the Danes attempt to gather all they know into one place. Refers to Oxford’s experience with cycle lanes, which demonstrated the need to mark lanes across side-road junctions, and their own research which identified no safety issue for cyclists using narrow cycle lanes (there was an issue for mopeds, but that’s not a problem we have to allow for in the UK).

Cycling in the Netherlands (2009) - tells you how wonderful they are, and their understanding of why. Note that 62% of journeys to work in the Netherlands are by car (Oxford=47%), because they’re not big on buses or walking.

Report that pothole
