There are a couple of side roads which are difficult to cross, notably Ferry Hinksey Road – some people cross Botley Road twice to avoid it. The pedestrian crossings are vital to connect the two sides of the road, and need to be adjusted so that they work better for pedestrians; these lights are not what holds the traffic up, so they should generally trigger immediately.

Mill Street: traffic island to make it easier to cross. This can use new-style bollards to be very short (maybe 3m) so that it does not obstruct vehicles turning out from the Westgate Hotel. This also prevents two cars lining up side-by-side to pull out of Mill Street, which is a hazard to cyclists.

White House pelican: adjust settings to trigger immediately at congested times (there is little point waiting for cars to pass when traffic is crawling; frequently the pedestrian manages to cross before the light changes)
|
|
Riverside Hotel: widen the pavement by about 80cm (the road does not need to be any wider than on Osney Bridge). This will reduce the extent to which general traffic cuts into the outbound cycle lane at the start of the bridge. The pavement opposite could be narrowed slightly where it curves left, to reflect the line typically taken by general traffic (and thus stop traffic from cutting in on the inbound cycle lane).

Osney Island pelican: adjust settings to trigger immediately at congested times (there is little point waiting for cars to pass when traffic is crawling; frequently the pedestrian manages to cross before the light changes)

Ferry Hinksey Road: traffic island to make it easier to cross. Virtually no-one uses the Pelican crossing (which should be removed). In the peak the vast majority of the traffic turns left out of Ferry Hinksey Road, so only one approach lane is required. The traffic island will need to be narrow and set back to allow large lorries to turn, but would be a significant improvement on the current situation.

Osney Arms pelican – adjust settings to trigger immediately at congested times (there is little point waiting for cars to pass when traffic is crawling; frequently the pedestrian manages to cross before the light changes)

Self-storage: widen the pavement (the bay is not heavily used and does not need to be any more than 3m deep)

Earl Street pelican: adjust settings to trigger immediately at congested times (there is little point waiting for cars to pass when traffic is crawling; frequently the pedestrian manages to cross before the light changes)
