{"id":12188,"date":"2025-05-21T13:52:32","date_gmt":"2025-05-21T13:52:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cyclox.org\/?p=12188"},"modified":"2025-10-31T16:54:58","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T16:54:58","slug":"what-cyclox-said-to-the-newly-elected-county-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cyclox.org\/index.php\/2025\/05\/21\/what-cyclox-said-to-the-newly-elected-county-council\/","title":{"rendered":"What Cyclox said to the newly elected County Council"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Cyclox has written to all recently elected County Councillors congratulating them and asking for their help to make Oxford streets safer for all.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Oxford has better cycling provision than most UK cities but it remains a city where lots of people cycle, rather than a \u2018cycling city\u2019, despite what the welcome signs say on the ring road.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>We have offered to work with councillors to tackle the challenges of  meeting the ambitions set out in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordshire.gov.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/file\/roads-and-transport-connecting-oxfordshire\/LocalTransportandConnectivityPlan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Local Transport and Connectivity Plan<\/a>\u00a0delivering the County\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordshire.gov.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/file\/roads-and-transport-policies-and-plans\/VisionZeroStrategyandActionPlan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vision Zero<\/a> targets to make our roads safer. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s not all about congratulations. The letter includes a comprehensive and far-reaching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclox.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Cyclox-policy-asks-OCC-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wish list<\/a> of 25 measures that would turn Oxford into the cycling city it claims to be.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key demands include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Spelling out funding for active travel funding in the budget, and agreeing to spend the county\u2019s discretionary transport funding on active travel.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>20 mph speed limits on <em>all<\/em> Oxford&#8217;s roads.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prioritising major cycle routes in the road maintenance\/resurfacing programme\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A programme, with funding and targets, to provide bicycle parking in residential areas that have no or poor off-street cycle parking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating safe, accessible and direct north-south and east-west cycling routes across the city centre.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finishing the rollout of School Streets schemes inside Oxford.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cyclox.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/No-overtaking-cyclists-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Roadworks traffic lights with red sign that says 'Narrow lane no overtaking cyclists'\" class=\"wp-image-12187\" style=\"width:538px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cyclox.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/No-overtaking-cyclists-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cyclox.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/No-overtaking-cyclists-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cyclox.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/No-overtaking-cyclists-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cyclox.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/No-overtaking-cyclists.jpg 1134w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Cyclox wants Oxford to be safe for all road users, including cyclists of all abilities, from commuters to children to older people. For this we need an infrastructure that makes cycle routes obvious, continuous and safe. Junctions must provide a clear way through for cyclists, rather than expecting them to compete for space with either pedestrians or cars. We want cyclists given as much priority as motor vehicles at roadworks \u2013 signs saying \u2018No overtaking cycles\u2019 rather than \u2018Cyclists dismount\u2019.
