{"id":7921,"date":"2020-02-20T17:10:22","date_gmt":"2020-02-20T17:10:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cyclox.org\/?p=7921"},"modified":"2025-02-20T20:53:45","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T20:53:45","slug":"oxfords-secret-cycle-paths-revealed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cyclox.org\/index.php\/2020\/02\/20\/oxfords-secret-cycle-paths-revealed\/","title":{"rendered":"Oxford\u2019s secret cycle paths revealed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cycle campaign group harness the power of Google Street View to make two traffic-free routes into the city centre easier to discover.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to a generous donor and the hard work of a local 360\u2070 photography expert, Cyclox has succeeded in adding two of Oxford\u2019s car-free walking and cycling routes to Google Street View. Now, for the first time, it is possible to explore these routes in the virtual world before venturing outside. The campaign group hopes this will enable more people to discover an alternative way to travel into the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the inside of a car, cycling along a congested main road often doesn\u2019t look much fun. Additionally, for families, new, and otherwise \u2018would-be\u2019 bike riders, cycling along Oxford\u2019s busy Cowley and Botley Roads can often look, feel and be unsafe. One of the things that prevent people from riding a bike is simply not knowing that there are quieter, safer, and more attractive alternative routes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To encourage more people to cycle into the city centre, more often, Cyclox has utilised Google Street View as a platform to showcase Oxford\u2019s most practical &#8212; and beautiful &#8212; off-road cycle paths. The first path is located in East Oxford and runs behind Cowley Marsh from Bartlemas Close &#8212; through wooded paths and playing fields &#8212; to Barracks Lane, leading to Hollow Way. It\u2019s part of National Cycle Route 57 and Local Cycle Network Route 4.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!4v1582217561288!6m8!1m7!1sCAoSLEFGMVFpcE56eHE5ZFdyaEIxcXZMZ19iOThMakNCMG5NREl1cDVibGxsQmNJ!2m2!1d51.74257229766562!2d-1.220801062881946!3f124.7!4f2.1400000000000006!5f0.7820865974627469\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The second path is located in West Oxford and follows a route over the Thames flood plain along Willow Walk; reputedly restored by John Ruskin 150 years ago. It runs from the end of Ferry Hinksey Road to North Hinksey Road (Local Cycle Network Route 8a) and, although it connects to streets just south of Botley Road, the path couldn\u2019t feel further away from the slow-moving traffic towards central Oxford. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!4v1582218084839!6m8!1m7!1sCAoSLEFGMVFpcE5NUEUyOUF5dHg4V295T2pxNlZaWkp4dEhfZnpjc1dwY0phMG1V!2m2!1d51.74648562505335!2d-1.28490786999464!3f328.41!4f5.909999999999997!5f0.7820865974627469\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Cyclox plans to look into adding more cycle paths to Google Street View, such as those found along the Marston Meadows, University Parks, and other relatively unknown routes like Hinksey Lakes in South Oxford, or along the river from St Ebbes to Gibbs Crescent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group\u2019s Chair, Dr. Alison Hill, says: \u201cCyclox wants our city\u2019s lesser-known, attractive, and quiet routes to be more discoverable, providing a greater opportunity for people to explore and enjoy Oxford.
